Sale of used books

Back to school

Salem Cemetery Decoration Day

Coffee Call, hosted by the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives and sponsored by Aderholt Medical LLC, will take place between 8 and 9 a.m., Saturday, August 6, at our location at 114 W. Pryor Street.

Women Empowering Women of Alabama will hold a clothing and food distribution on August 7, from 10 a.m. to noon, from Lincoln Bridgeforth Park. It is open to the community.

Nebo Community Church

Nebo Community Church will have revival services on Sunday, August 7 at 5 p.m., as well as Monday, August 8 and Tuesday, August 9 at 6:30 p.m. The Evangelist will be Brandon Pylant with a special song from the Pylant family.

Get dirty in the library

The Limestone County Master Gardeners are offering a free presentation on “Preparing a Fall Garden” on August 9 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Athens-Limestone Public Library. Jay Moorer, our local representative from Bonnie Plants, is our guest speaker.

Meeting of beekeepers

The Limestone Beekeepers Association is holding a meeting at 6:30 p.m. on August 9, from the Alfa office on the highway. 72, across from Dixie Auto.

Bible Lands Museum

From August 11 to 15, the Bible Lands Museum will be on tour in Athens. It will be housed at the Church of Christ of Mount Carmel in Athens, Alabama, and will feature several exhibits for the public. The event is free.

Career fair

The Athens-Limestone County Family Resource Center will host a job fair on Friday, August 12, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Immediate openings and interviews are available. Please bring your ID. Location: 406 S Jefferson St. Athens AL 35611 (next to Dub’s Burgers).

Bedingfield Cemetery Decorating and Cleanup Day

Bedingfield Cemetery in Rogersville, Ala. on CR-566 will have a decorating/cleaning day, Friday, August 12 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

tractor pull

On August 12 and 13, the annual Lexington Truck and Tractor Pull is back, at 7 p.m. on the 12 and 6 p.m. on the 13. The event takes place at Lexington Motorsports Park.

Sandlin Cemetery

Children’s summer program

The FreshWind Christian Fellowship and Women Empowering Women are hosting a free summer program for children June 6 through July 29, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is available for ages 6 to 16 and will take place at 17200 Lucas Ferry Road in Athens.

Digital Literacy Course

The Athens-Limestone County Public Library will host a series of digital literacy classes in conjunction with Calhoun Community College and Drake State Community & Technical College. The courses will boost your digital confidence and provide you with the skills and training needed in today’s job market. Houston Memorial Library Daily Book Sale

Houston Memorial Library and Museum, 101 North Houston Street in Athens, holds a daily book sale. The bookshop, the museum and the library are open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and the first Saturdays of the month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Tuesdays they are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.


Bingo is back up and running for the public at Decatur Elks Lodge every Monday. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games begin at 6:30 p.m. No outside food or drink will be permitted. Elks Lodge is located at 2625 Centron Drive SW in Decatur. More information:

Women Empowering Women of Alabama After-School Feeding Program, in partnership with FreshWind Christian Fellowship, provides free after-school meals to students. Meals are available from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. More information: Janice Williams, (256) 233-5995.

The Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church Pantry will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month at 1911 Hine St., Athens. Clients must provide proof of at least one of the following: eligibility to receive supplementary food assistance (SNAP/food stamps); eligibility for temporary assistance to needy families; eligibility to receive Supplemental Security Income; an income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level; or special circumstances. Eligibility forms provided at distribution site. Must have a valid ID or driver’s license. Only one distribution per household while stocks last. Monetary and food donations accepted. Sale of used books

Virtual Exercise Class

The Limestone County Council on Aging presents a virtual exercise class from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Fridays via Zoom. The classes are called SAIL, which stands for Stay Active and Independent for Life. More information: (256) 233-6412.


City cemeteries

The City of Athens reminds residents and families of the following regarding its cemeteries: No flowers or decorations are permitted on the grounds between April 1 and October 31, except following a burial; placement of flowers acceptable all year round on the monuments, at their base or at the fire hydrants; fresh flowers will be removed one week after the funeral; silk flowers will be removed 21 days after a funeral; cemetery director’s approval required before planting flowers, shrubs, trees or sod; City staff will remove any trees or shrubs deemed harmful to adjacent land or tomb openings; and worn, tattered, or damaged American flags will be removed and disposed of properly.

Bethel Cemetery

Bethel Cemetery Annual monetary contributions for the upkeep of the cemetery are due. If you have family members buried in Bethel Cemetery, send donations to Tommy Sprague at 25917 Pepper Road in Athens. Total funding for the cemetery comes from contributions. The cleaning of family gravesites is also encouraged as the mowing season is about to begin. For more information, contact Sprague at (256) 874-8491.


Red Cross

The Red Cross is holding a campaign at the Athens-Limestone Visitor Center on August 10 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
