tripping over aggregate concrete

the VAUST studio series is deeply inspired by the brutalist buildings of berlin. “With their unique formal language and the composition of the volumes comes a certain imperfection, a subject that is quite fashionable when it comes to interior aesthetics these days. “ designers share. “Taking a closer look at the composition of this different way of creating architecture, we came across a very characteristic and fascinating building material called exposed aggregate concrete. by simply washing off a thin layer of concrete after removing the mold from the construction parts, the exposed material shows the gravel, which holds the concrete together. the artificially generated result can be adjusted by changing the concrete recipe. ‘ explains the team.

by diving deep into this specific material and its application technique, the studio has created its own personal formula to arrive at its perception of the aesthetic interpretation. instead of using local gravel, the designers chose two kinds of Italian marble gravel to create the perfect color. a warm beige hue is paired with a complementary terracotta tone, forming a warm and elegant selection of objects.

give a new rebirth to a forgotten subject

the “total exhibition” series comprises seven interior objects that demonstrate a simplicity of form with a strong emphasis on the material, a unique interpretation of the proportions and composition of the materials. exposed aggregate concrete is contextualized with carefully brushed aluminum as they create unity. some pieces celebrate the material as they simply consist of either pure metal translated into calming formal language, or paying homage to nature by giving larger chunks of gravel a scene as an object suspended from the ceiling. they present themselves as companions while having their own monumental characteristics.

“We embrace the cultural value of this precious architectural material. it is our response to pay homage to the city we live and love. the total exhibition is our attempt to give a new rebirth to an almost forgotten and rejected material. ‘ mentions the VAUST studio.
